CPR/AED/First Aid| Lifeguard Training/Water Safety Instructor | Learn to Swim
CPR/AED/FIRST AID - All classes held in the Hamel Recreation Center classroom, 8 participant max per class/per instructor and 4 person minimum. When classes fill, a waiting list is created, with the hope of finding an additional instructor or setting up a new class.
SPECIAL NOTE: Payment is required at the time of registration ONLINE to insure enrollment in the class selected. There are NO CASH REFUNDS. If you are unable to attend a course after registering, you will be issued credit toward another program to be used within one year. To be eligible for a credit, you must contact the office PRIOR to the class. If a class is canceled due to low enrollment (less than 4 registered participants), you will be called and offered a refund or transfer into another class date.
NOTE: All materials for American Red Cross classes can be downloaded for FREE or purchased by going to www.redcross.org.
*NEW: CPR/AED and FIRST AID CHALLENGES - This means that individuals get tested on materials without prior instruction. Participants must show proof of previous certification. If the participant fails, they are not eligible to repeat the challenge nor take a review course. They are required to take the full course again and pay all applicable fees. Call Linda Hayden, 862-4515, to determine available times BEFORE registering.

NOTE for all programs: If your CPR and/or First Aid certifications have expired by more than one year, you are only permitted to challenge materials (meaning no instruction is given before testing). If you fail, you must take the full course (pay full price) and can not re-challenge or take another re-certification course.
If a group of 4 or more needs certification and cannot fit into one of the scheduled classes, contact Linda Hayden at 862-4515 or linda.hayden@unh.edu to find out about available options. Non-certification lectures about CPR/First Aid are also available for staff trainings and workshops.
CPR INSTRUCTOR COURSE: Become certified to teach American Red Cross CPR and First Aid classes (Lay Responder and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer & Health Care Provider). Attendance is required in all sessions and there are on line requirements prior to the first meeting.

Cost: $150 for UNH affiliated participants/ $175 all others

The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training course is to teach participants the knowledge and skills needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. The course content and activities prepare participants to recognize and respond quickly and effectively to emergencies and prevent downing and injuries. This course includes First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, and AED.
Prerequisites:

- Be at least 15 years of age on or before the final scheduled session of this course

Swim 300 yards continuously, using these strokes in the following order:
- 100 yards of front crawl using rhythmic breathing and a stabilizing, propellant kick.
- 100 yards of breaststroke using a pull, breathe, kick and glide sequence.
- 100 yards of either front crawl or breaststroke.
- Swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, within 1 minute, 40 seconds.
Attendance is mandatory for all dates listed below.

LIFEGUARD REVIEW/RECERTIFICATION
The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguard Review course is to review and demonstrate skills needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies in order to obtain re-certification. This course includes First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, and AED.
To be eligible for the review course, participants must have successfully completed an American Red Cross course within the last 4 years and a CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer course within the last 2 years. You must show proof of certifications on the first day of class.
Attendance is mandatory for all dates listed below.
COST: $75.00 (includes a $10 non-refundable fee for the pre-course test)
WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR
The purpose of the American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor course is to train instructor candidates to teach courses in the American Red Cross Swimming & Water Safety program by developing their understanding of how to use the course materials, how to conduct training sessions and how to evaluate participants' progress.
Prerequisites:

- Be at least 16 years of age on or before the final scheduled session of this course
- Maintain position on back 1 minute in deep water (floating or sculling)
- Tread water for 1 minute

Demonstrate the ability to perform the following skills at an ARC Learn to Swim Level 4
- Front & Back crawl - 25 yards
- Breaststroke - 25 yards
- Elementary backstroke - 25 yards
- Sidestroke - 25 yards
- Butterfly - 15 yards

AMERICAN RED CROSS LEARN TO SWIM
The American Red Cross Learn to Swim classes provide instruction to help swimmers of all ages and abilities develop their swimming and water safety skills. It is designed to give students a positive learning experience. Learn to swim teaches aquatic and safety skills in a logical progression. The objective is to teach people to swim and to be safe in, on, and around the water.
