Red Cross Lifeguard & Water Safety Instructor Course

The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training course is to teach participants the knowledge and skills needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. The course content and activities prepare participants to recognize and respond quickly and effectively to emergencies and prevent downing and injuries. This course includes First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, and AED.
Prerequisites:

- Be at least 15 years of age on or before the final scheduled session of this course

Swim 300 yards continuously, using these strokes in the following order:
- 100 yards of front crawl using rhythmic breathing and a stabilizing, propellant kick.
- 100 yards of breaststroke using a pull, breathe, kick and glide sequence.
- 100 yards of either front crawl or breaststroke.
- Swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, within 1 minute, 40 seconds.
- 2 minutes treading water with hands out of the water

LIFEGUARD REVIEW/RECERTIFICATION
The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguard Review course is to review and demonstrate skills needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies in order to obtain re-certification. This course includes First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, and AED.
To be eligible for the review course, participants must have successfully completed an American Red Cross course and still be current. You must show proof of certifications on the first day of class.

WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR
The purpose of the American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor course is to train instructor candidates to teach courses in the American Red Cross Swimming & Water Safety program by developing their understanding of how to use the course materials, how to conduct training sessions and how to evaluate participants' progress.
Prerequisites:

- Be at least 16 years of age on or before the final scheduled session of this course
- Maintain position on back 1 minute in deep water (floating or sculling)
- Tread water for 1 minute

Demonstrate the ability to perform the following skills at an ARC Learn to Swim Level 4
- Front & Back crawl - 25 yards
- Breaststroke - 25 yards
- Elementary backstroke - 25 yards
- Sidestroke - 25 yards
- Butterfly - 15 yards
